Cinco De Mayo in the Bay – 2016

Happy Cinco De Mayo!

Often incorrectly described as Mexico’s independence day, Cinco De Mayo actually celebrates a military victory which happened in 1862. The Mexican army defeated France at the Battle of Puebla, a win which helped to unify the Mexican people against interfering European countries.

Today, the celebrations that take place on Cinco De Mayo celebrate Mexican culture, strength and resiliency; but you don’t have to be Mexican to celebrate!

Want to get involved? There is lots to do today, and this weekend too. Here is a round-up of what’s happening around the Bay!

For family-friendly festivities, check out one of our favorite blogs, Red Tricycle. They have compiled a great list  of celebrations suitable for the littlest ninos (kiddos)!

I love Mexican food! It was what I missed most when living in the UK. If you haven’t tried it yet, here are some great places to visit offering some enticing specials on tasty treats from tacos and tequila to margaritas and Mariachi!

Other events including music, dancing and art can be found in Santa Rosa, Oakland, San Jose, and all across the City and Peninsula.

Are you celebrating somewhere we haven’t listed? Let us know!

About Michelle Laker

A California native; I spent 10 years living, studying, working, (and falling in love) in the United Kingdom. I returned to the Bay Area in 2011, with my British husband in tow. I am re-adjusting to life in the bay, feeling more like an expat than a local. I have spent my career working with international student & families. I love learning about other cultures, languages, and traditions. My desire to welcome newcomers, and help you make the most of your new life in the Bay Area comes from the unforgettable memories (and mistakes) I made during my time in the United Kingdom. If you've just arrived, and don't know where to start, email me (michelle-at-lifeinthebay.org). I am happy to help!
