About Life in the Bay

2017: a new life in the bay for all immigrants. Love lives here.

Life in the Bay was born from the desire to create community between immigrants making a new home in the San Francisco Bay Area. Initially focusing on the students and scholars at Stanford, in 2015 Life in the Bay relaunched and refocused. For the past two years we have been bringing together the wider international community, reaching the men and women, and their families, who have come here to study, work, or pursue entrepreneurial dreams. As a team we have written more than 130 articles providing tips, guidance and support on topics such as finding a school, entertaining visitors, and dealing with the death of a loved one while overseas. We have shared countless local new stories, highlighted local events, and more recently brought you updates on political changes that directly affect our community.

In part due to the recent political upheaval, we’ve become more aware of other immigrant groups, who may need our support as they make a new life in the Bay Area, not by choice, but as a last resort, through refugee resettlement programs. The traditional expat that we’ve served has good job prospects, extensive resources and ready-made connections from the companies that employ them, and possibly a six-digit salary. Job prospects are not always so good for other immigrants – refugees and forced migrants: arriving here with nothing but what they could carry, they have few connections or resources, and a meager amount of government handouts to survive.

All of these immigrants have all left their homeland to start again, and yet their integration process is so different. Therefore in 2017, we are pushing forward and expanding our mission. Aside from helping the traditional expat,  we will be looking for concrete ways in which all immigrants and Bay Area natives can truly come together to support each other and create community.

We’re here to help anyone, from anywhere, create a new life in the Bay Area.

Are you starting a new life in the Bay Area?

Welcome! Whether you are following your spouse or partner who is relocating for a new job, or an opportunity to study; OR you are embarking on this journey to California to pursue your own dreams; the Life in the Bay Team is here to help you settle into your new life!

Have you come from Singapore, Wales, England, Japan, South Africa, Italy, Germany, Indonesia? So have we!

We are a group of expats, and American transplants who have “been there, done that”. We want to share what we’ve learned with you, to help you make the most of your time in California. From getting settled and learning about California culture to family life and working and volunteering, we’ve got some inside tips to share with you.

Do you still have questions? Ask us. We are here to help. No question is too small or silly. Settling into a new life, in a new country is exciting, but also challenging. We’ve all made mistakes, misunderstood a custom, and felt alone and confused. Hopefully, in a few months you will be able to look back and laugh at your blunder, you will share new traditions with your friends and family back home, and you will explore California with new friends.

Welcome to the Bay Area. Welcome home!
